[Sportschosun, Jang Jong-ho] A video showing two women being caged and paraded through the streets in China is spreading online, sparking controversy.

Inside the cage were two young women wearing masks and a black dog.

According to Chinese media outlets including NetEase, the video was filmed in Miluoshi, Hunan Province. It shows several men and women pushing a large cage through the streets. During the procession, they also struck what appeared to be a gong or cymbal to draw the attention of passersby.

A sign suggesting adultery was hung on the outside of the cage, which contained the two women and the black dog, leading to claims that the act was meant to publicly humiliate them.

Internet users who saw the video criticized it, saying it brought back memories of past practices in China where people were privately punished for adultery or infidelity.

As the controversy grew, local authorities began verifying whether the video was authentic.

Police said they do not rule out the possibility that the video was staged to attract online views and are currently investigating the facts.
