[Sportschosun Jiyoung Jo] Netflix variety show "Better Late Than Single Season 2" has unveiled a new level of romantic tension, different from the previous season.
▶ Viewer advice mode activated.. Overly invested national dating coaches
"Better Late Than Single," which opened a new chapter in dating reality shows by honestly following the first love attempts of lifelong singles, is expected to turn viewers into "national dating coaches" again in Season 2. Because the cast is so honest about their feelings, they sometimes offer unsolicited advice. But their awkwardness makes them even more endearing and easier to root for. Their dating journey is expected to draw viewers in as well, delivering the appeal of a relatable romance reality show.
PD Kim No-eun, who directed the show, pointed out the difference, saying, "Their awkward behavior makes you laugh, but it also feels like 'real-life empathy' because everyone has experienced something like that at least once." PD Won Seung-jae said the key difference in "Better Late Than Single Season 2" is that it makes people want to cheer for someone's beginning. "In Season 1, it was the first dating program where every cast member received support," he noted. "I think that was both the show's distinguishing point and one of the reasons so many people loved it."
▶ Evolved devices to spark romance
In Season 2, the missions and devices have been prepared with much greater detail. They are designed to help lifelong singles, who are not used to flirting, naturally build romantic tension. The "5-Minute Bookstore," which helps participants learn about one another, now includes a "new arrivals" system that lets them check real-time interest levels. The "Single-Solo Post Office," an expanded version of Season 1's mailbox, gives the cast a chance to express their feelings more actively by sending not only letters but also gifts to the person they like.
In addition, various romance-triggering devices and missions are expected to heighten the excitement of the cast, including the "couple-ring dinner," where participants wear matching rings while eating together, and special date courses designed to encourage natural conversation and laughter. Kim said, "We learned from Season 1 that if there is nothing there, nothing happens, so we worked hard to improve it. We tried to create excitement naturally without making it feel burdensome."
But part of the charm of "Better Late Than Single Season 2" is that things can still unfold differently from what the production team intended. Won said, "The appeal of lifelong singles is that they always go beyond expectations." He added, "I hope viewers enjoy the way they carefully save gift coupons that can only be used in Single-Solo Village, or how they use them with The Devil's Plan-like strategy, thinking there must be a twist in the device meant to help them give gifts and express their feelings. I also hope they enjoy the misunderstandings that arise from it."
▶ Car, the Garden's "sharp-tongued" warmth? It failed in less than 30 minutes
Seo In-guk, Kang Han-na, Lee Eun-ji, and Car, the Garden, who move between favoritism mode and sharp-tongued remarks, are the biggest differentiating factor of "Better Late Than Single Season 2." Won said, "One of the reasons the show was loved among so many dating programs was the presence of the 'dating makers.' They cheer at times and scold at others, and their chemistry has become even stronger in Season 2."
As they root for the lifelong singles' love more than anyone else, attention is focused on the upgraded reactions of the dating makers, from excitement to unsolicited advice. Kim teased, "Kang Han-na, who had never once gotten angry and was like a 'Mother Teresa,' finally got mad. On the other hand, Car, the Garden said he would wrap things up warmly this time, but he failed in less than 30 minutes." Won also said, "If you pay attention to Kang Han-na's change, after she had always kept her composure in any situation, it will be even more fun to watch."
Finally, Kim described "an old diary" as the keyword that best captures "Better Late Than Single Season 2." He said, "When you open it, embarrassment rushes back, but it is still so fun that you cannot stop." Won added, "The people have changed, the format has changed, and the devices have changed, but the fact that this is still a story about lifelong singles has not changed. They may still be awkward and frustrating, but the strange healing feeling and the urge to cheer for them will remain the same." He concluded by choosing "familiar things are dangerous" as the key phrase, saying, "It feels familiar, but it is still fun. Please enjoy it with the same cheering spirit."
"Better Late Than Single Season 2" follows lifelong singles with zero dating experience but sky-high expectations as they take on their first romance. It is a makeover-style dating reality show that invites empathy and unsolicited advice. Seo In-guk, Kang Han-na, Car, the Garden, and Lee Eun-ji return as dating makers from the previous season. The show will be released on Netflix on July 7.
