[Sportschosun Jang Jong-ho] Kim Jong-hyun, a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Korea University Guro Hospital, has taken office as president of the Korean Neurotraumatology Society. His term runs for one year until May 2027.
The Korean Neurotraumatology Society is an academic organization founded to advance clinical and basic research in neurotrauma, including head and spinal cord injuries, and to promote scholarly exchange. With neurosurgery at its core, experts from a range of related medical fields take part in the society, helping improve the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with neurotrauma.
At the meeting, Professor Kim said that neurotraumatology is a field that deals with traumatic injuries to the brain and spine. He noted that it plays a key role on the front lines of treating critically injured patients in the acute phase, while also covering long-term functional recovery, quality of life and return to society. "We will expand and strengthen exchanges with overseas societies so that our society can share and develop clinical experience and broad knowledge, and we will reinforce a multidisciplinary cooperation system with experts in trauma surgery, intensive care medicine and Emergency Medicine (EM)," he said.
Meanwhile, Kim, who is widely regarded as a leading expert in stereotactic neurosurgery with more than 25 years of experience in epilepsy and Parkinson's disease surgery, has participated in co-authoring a global neurosurgery textbook and in establishing treatment guidelines for procedures such as epilepsy lesionectomy. He has also served as president of the Korean Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and the Korean Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Society.
