[Sportschosun Jo Ji-young] The zombie action film 'Colony' (directed by Yeon Sang-ho and produced by Wow Point and Smilegate) is leading the box office across Asia.
After surpassing 5 million moviegoers on the 13th, proving its explosive popularity, 'Colony' continues its strong run by sweeping the top ranks of all-time Korean film box office charts in Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Released in Malaysia on the 22nd of last month, 'Colony' reached a cumulative audience of 1,511,802 by the 14th of this month, taking No. 1 on the all-time Korean film box office chart. The result is especially notable because it surpassed the record held by 'Train to Busan' for 10 years. As a result, Malaysia's all-time Korean film box office ranking has been rewritten with 'Colony' at No. 1, 'Train to Busan' at No. 2, and 'Peninsula' at No. 3.
In Indonesia, the film drew a cumulative 1,062,394 viewers through the 14th and rose to No. 2 on the all-time Korean film box office chart just 12 days after release. In the Philippines, it recorded 347,438 viewers as of the 14th, also placing No. 2 among all Korean films released there.
It has also made its mark in other markets, ranking No. 4 among all-time Korean films in Singapore and No. 5 in both Thailand and Taiwan. Riding this momentum, 'Colony' opened in Laos, Australia, and New Zealand on the 11th, and in Vietnam on the 12th. With strong reactions across Asia, attention is now turning to whether the film can continue its box office surge.
'Colony' follows a desperate struggle inside a building sealed off by an unidentified outbreak, where isolated survivors fight against infected people evolving in unpredictable ways. The film stars Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rok, and Go Soo, and is directed by Yeon Sang-ho, known for 'Train to Busan,' 'Peninsula,' and 'The Ugly.'
