"50-Year-Old Late-Blooming Mom" Kim Hyo-jin Relates to the Pain of an Elderly Mother Being Snubbed by Her Son: "That’s My Story"

[Sportschosun reporter Jo Yoon-sun] Comedian Kim Hyo-jin opened up about the challenges of being a mother who had a child later in life.

On the 17th, a video titled "A Story That Turned Into a Sea of Tears After a Son's One Sentence" was uploaded to the YouTube channel "Kim Ji-seon and Kim Hyo-jin's Geuraejjeo."

In the video, Kim Hyo-jin read a story about a late-born son who walked past his older mother as if he did not know her in front of his friends, leaving her in tears. She empathized, saying, "This is not someone else's story. It's my story."

Kim Hyo-jin, who has a younger daughter, said, "When I go to the daycare center, I am the oldest mother there. So I can relate better to the grandparents than to the other mothers," adding, "The other mothers do not really approach me."

She explained, "Even when I had my first child, I was the oldest among the mothers' group. I had my first child at 37, so I was already considered an older mother back then. Eight years later, I had my second late-born child at 45, and now I am 50."

Kim Hyo-jin said, "The younger grandparents are in their 50s. So when I meet people, I end up talking with the grandmothers rather than the mothers."

She added, "Of course, part of it is that I am a celebrity who appears on TV, so they find me intimidating. But at the daycare center, most of the mothers are in their 20s or 30s, and at most in their early 40s."

She also complained, "The world has changed so much. When we go to places like Lotte World, we used to buy tickets at the ticket booth, but now everything is done on mobile, so I do not know how to do it and have to ask another mother. It was so embarrassing."

She went on to say, "When I read picture books to my daughter, I cannot see the text because I have presbyopia. My daughter has now learned to read Hangul, and she says, 'Mom, why are you so slow at reading?' It makes me so upset."

Meanwhile, Kim Hyo-jin, born in 1976, married a man one year younger than her in 2009, gave birth to her first daughter in 2012, and welcomed her second daughter in 2020.
