Shim Soo-bong Reveals Rare Illness: "I Can't Hear Sounds, and I Collapse When There's a Loud Noise" ('Day & Night')

[Sportschosun Lee Woo-joo] Singer Shim Soo-bong will reveal her extraordinary musical talent, which showed even as an infant, on MBN's "Kim Joo-ha's Day & Night."

Shim Soo-bong, a legendary singer in the Republic of Korea with 48 years since her debut, will share the fateful story behind her lifelong connection to music in episode 30 of MBN's "Kim Joo-ha's Day & Night," which airs on Saturday the 20th.

Shim Soo-bong says, "I am the last descendant of a famous family from Chungcheong-do in the Junggoje school of Pansori," surprising everyone with the story of why she was destined to become a singer. She then adds, "My mother and aunt said that when I was a baby and they sang, I kept time with my toes," and confesses that she began learning piano at age five thanks to her mother, who recognized her natural musical talent.

In particular, Shim Soo-bong reveals an unexpected past, saying, "Before my debut as a singer, I played drums for the Eighth United States Army." She explains that at 16, she performed as a drummer on the Eighth United States Army stage, where only the top musicians of the time could appear. "I happened to see a woman playing drums on TV and became fascinated with the instrument, so I went to a music academy," she said, drawing admiration for her innate musical DNA, which extends from piano to drums, guitar, lyric writing, and composing.

Shim Soo-bong also opens up about the rare illness she has struggled with for a long time. She says, "In middle school, my friends startled me, and after that I became extremely sensitive to loud sounds," revealing that she suffers from Misophonia syndrome. Describing it as "an illness that makes me unable to hear sounds," she adds, "If there is a sharp noise or a loud sound, I collapse. Just in case, I always carry earplugs," evoking sympathy. Even while living with a rare condition that could be devastating for a singer, Shim Soo-bong's determination to keep making music continues to move everyone.

Meanwhile, MBN's issue-driven talk show "Kim Joo-ha's Day & Night" is a new-format program that promises "day and night, calm and passion, information and emotion." It airs every Saturday at 9:40 p.m.
