[Sportschosun, Jeong An-ji] Actor Son Tae-young shared her honest parenting experience, saying, "During puberty, they say everything is mom's fault," as she sympathized with parents facing the realities of raising teenage children.
On the 21st, a video titled "Riho, who grew tall like mom Son Tae-young, graduation vlog from elementary school before we knew it" was uploaded to the YouTube channel "Mrs. New Jersey Son Tae-young."
In the video, Son Tae-young strongly related to a viewer's story: "My fourth-grade child always says everything is fine, but when I talk to the teacher, there have often been conflicts with friends. There was even a time when a fight with a friend escalated and I was contacted by the other child's parents. I worry that I may be doing something wrong."
She sympathized, saying, "It is really upsetting when a mother gets a call from the homeroom teacher. It feels like my child is the only one who did something terribly wrong, and I worry it will get worse once puberty starts. I think this is an important time." Son Tae-young added, "I always tell my child, 'If you feel like you do not get along with that friend, take a little distance for a while and try spending time with other friends too.'"
Son Tae-young stressed that the first step in solving a problem is identifying the cause of the conflict. She said, "I think we need to first figure out whether the fighting follows the same pattern, or whether the reasons are different each time." She advised, "If the reasons for the arguments follow a similar pattern, I would talk a lot with the child about the root cause of the conflict." She added, "It is also worth looking at whether the child has become sensitive with the start of puberty, or whether they are naturally someone who expresses emotions strongly."
Above all, Son Tae-young drew laughter by sharing her own experience with parents raising children in puberty.
She said, "When I get emotional, my child gets emotional too. Haven't I been through puberty myself? When my child got worked up, I got worked up too. But that was not good. I was boiling inside. Because they say everything is mom's fault." She added, "They even said, 'If you trip on the street, you'll probably say it's mom's fault.'"
Son Tae-young emphasized, "In the end, it passes." She added, "Rather than parents becoming anxious first, it is important to listen from the child's perspective and empathize with them."
Meanwhile, Kwon Sang-woo and Son Tae-young married in September 2008 and have one son and one daughter. Son Tae-young is currently living in the United States with her children, while Kwon Sang-woo travels between South Korea and the United States.
