[Sportschosun Kim Jun-seok] Football commentator Lee Young-pyo offered a blunt assessment of the South Korea national football team's early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The KBS2 variety show "Boss in the Mirror," which aired on the 28th, drew attention with behind-the-scenes stories from Jeon Hyun-moo's debut as a 2026 FIFA World Cup broadcaster, along with Lee Young-pyo's candid analysis of South Korean football.
The episode featured Jeon Hyun-moo's World Cup casting debut and the stories that followed. His best effort in his first attempt at football commentary drew support, while his chemistry with Lee Young-pyo also stood out.
As Jeon Hyun-moo and Lee Young-pyo's playful back-and-forth topped same-time ratings for the World Cup broadcast, the two shared behind-the-scenes stories that were even more intense than the match itself and more candid than the commentary.
Jeon Hyun-moo and Lee Young-pyo met Lee Kyung-kyu, Yang Joon-hyuk, and Jung Ho-young, who were cheering for the South Korean team on site in Mexico, and all of them looked disappointed.
Lee Young-pyo apologized on behalf of the football community, saying, "I'm sorry," which added to the sense of regret.
He then said, "The South Africa match was a complete mess, to the point where you couldn't even point to one single problem. There was no structure, no purpose, and it was hard to tell why they were even running. I have been commentating for more than 10 years, but this was the most difficult match to explain, the hardest to commentate, and the hardest to understand," expressing his honest disappointment with the game.
Lee Kyung-kyu, a well-known football fan in the entertainment world, shared a vivid account of Kim Min-jae's substitution. Watching from directly behind the South Korea bench, he said, "After Kim Min-jae came to the bench, he suddenly got angry. I don't know the exact reason for the substitution, but I still don't understand why Kim Min-jae was taken out," relaying what he had seen firsthand.
In response, Lee Young-pyo said, "I understand how the players feel," and recalled his own experience at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, when he made his first appearance in the third match because of an injury.
He added, "I prepared with the mindset that even if I played just this one match and never played football again in my life, I still had to go out there," explaining how desperately he approached each game and showing empathy for Kim Min-jae.
After finishing his World Cup broadcasting debut, Jeon Hyun-moo honestly admitted, "I prepared hard, but it was difficult. I was lacking in many ways."
Lee Young-pyo then praised him, saying, "It was a very difficult match to commentate, but Hyun-moo did much better than I expected." He added, "I gave my own first broadcast 20 points. Hyun-moo's first broadcast was about 80 points," and encouraged Jeon for taking on the challenge under pressure.
Meanwhile, the South Korean national team finished the group stage with one win and two losses in Group A and hoped for a third-place wildcard chance, but advancement to the round of 32 was ultimately denied depending on results from other groups.
