[Sportschosun reporter Jo Ji-young] Disney and Pixar's animated film 'Toy Story 5' (directed by Andrew Stanton and Makenna Harris) topped the overall box office on its opening day, signaling a strong start at the box office.
According to the integrated computer network for theater tickets, 'Toy Story 5' drew 94,171 moviegoers on its first day, June 17, and took No. 1 at the box office, surpassing 'Gunchae' and 'Wild Thing.' It also outperformed the opening-day score of 'Project Hail Mary,' this year's top-grossing imported film, which drew 76,003 viewers, raising expectations for the box office run of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the toys.
The film is also drawing enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences alike, with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, a 99% CGV Golden Egg Index, and a 9.6 viewer rating on Naver as of June 17.
Viewers have continued to praise the warm humor and emotion of 'Toy Story 5,' leaving comments such as, "Memories that build over time, an expanding story, and deepening affection" (ni***, Naver), "A film that gave longtime fans childhood wonder and nostalgia, while bringing a new generation fresh laughs and emotion!" (ro***, Naver), "A beautiful story I wish would always stay by my side" (Jin***, CGV), and "It's Toy Story, as expected... I was so happy to see these cuties again, and then I suddenly got emotional... it was moving too" (Tae***, CGV).
With a strong debut at the top of the box office and explosive word of mouth, 'Toy Story 5' is now expected to continue its momentum.
'Toy Story 5' follows Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the other toys as they reunite for an unpredictable journey after facing an unprecedented crisis with the arrival of Lilypad, a smart tablet that becomes Bonnie's new friend. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, and Greta Lee lend their voices, while Andrew Stanton, who helped plan the previous installment, and Makenna Harris, who produced 'Elemental,' co-directed the film.
