A university student in China had difficulty breathing and walking after eating undercooked meat.

According to Chinese media such as Hangzhou Daily and Jimu News, Wang, a student at a university in Guangzhou, showed fever and diarrhea after enjoying a barbecue with friends last month. After treatment, diarrhea improved, but after a week, the limbs began to lose strength and it became difficult to walk.

He went to a hospital affiliated with Guangzhou Medical School, and neurological examination showed that the muscle strength of his limbs as well as other muscles decreased.

Even while undergoing treatment, his condition worsened, leading to weakness in his limbs, difficulty swallowing, and shortness of breath.

The medical staff who underwent a thorough examination diagnosed it as 'Guillain Barre syndrome'. It is also referred to as 'acute infectious polyneuritis' or ' idiopathic polyneuritis'.

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a multiple neuropathy that causes muscle weakness and is characterized by a wide range of peripheral and cranial nerves. It is a rare disease that occurs between 0.8 and 1.8 people per 100,000 people per year.

In the early stages of Guillain-Barre syndrome, most people have mild fever or sensory abnormalities like a cold, and these symptoms appear suddenly and quickly lead to paralysis. First, toe paralysis appears, and it spreads gradually to the legs. At this time, paralysis occurs simultaneously on both sides. As it moves to the torso, arms, and head, sensory abnormalities and muscle weakness become severe.

Although the cause is not clear, infection symptoms appear before the disease appears in most patients, and these infections are known as triggers for the disease.

Fever, fatigue, sore throat, upper respiratory tract infection, and drugs are mainly considered. Rarely, it appears after influenza vaccination or vaccination.

Medical staff at Guangzhou Medical University Hospital initiated plasma separation exchange and immunoglobulin injection treatment for Wang.

Plasma separation exchange is a treatment to remove toxins in plasma, and immunoglobulin injection is a treatment that helps control immunity.

The medical team performed plasma separation and exchange on Wang five times. Immunoglobulin was then injected.

After more than 10 days of treatment, Wang finally improved and was able to be discharged from the ICU.
