Mexican authorities said they have arrested one suspect after Chinese tourists visiting Mexico for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were robbed at gunpoint near the airport.

According to Chinese media outlets, including Beijing News, Chinese tourists Wang and Li arrived at Mexico City International Airport on the night of the 10th and were robbed while traveling by rental car to a hotel in the city.

Two masked robbers on motorcycles forced the vehicle to stop, pointed guns at the victims, and fled with valuables, including expensive watches, cash, and a bag containing passports.

The two reported the crime to local police immediately after arriving at the hotel and also sought help through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China emergency hotline.

Mexico City Police later formed a joint investigation team with the Prosecution Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and arrested one of the two suspects on the 13th. The investigation into the other suspect is continuing.

Experts say the risk of crime can rise when major international sporting events are held, and are urging tourists to exercise extra caution.
