[Sportschosun Reporter Jang Jong-ho] As the 2026 FIFA World Cup is in full swing, the outfit worn by a former female mayor from Mexico while cheering at a match has sparked controversy.
According to foreign media outlets including The Sun, Sandra Cuevas, 40, the former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, a central district in Mexico City, has recently drawn attention on social media for cheering on the Mexico national football team at a World Cup match.
Photos posted online show Cuevas wearing a white sleeveless top with a Mexico national football team jersey tied around her waist. Her thin straps and deeply cut top in particular became a hot topic, prompting a stream of comments about her appearance and clothing.
Internet users have posted sharply divided reactions, with some criticizing her as "an embarrassment to Mexican politics" and calling it "inappropriate clothing," while others said, "She isn't even naked, so why criticize her?" and "That's some passionate support."
As the backlash grew, Cuevas responded directly. She joked, "What can I do? You can't take it off," before adding, "I don't take it as an attack. Some people may think that way, but we Mexicans are just like this."
Cuevas served as mayor of Cuauhtémoc from October 2021 to March 2024 and is currently active in the political group Mexico Nuevo, according to reports.
Meanwhile, the Mexico national football team opened group play with a 2-0 win over South Africa and then beat South Korea 1-0 to extend its winning streak to two games. The result secured first place in the group and an early berth in the round of 16. Mexico still has one final group-stage match left against Czech Republic.
