[Sportschosun reporter Jang Jong-ho] Ain Hospital, under the Ain Medical Foundation chaired by Oh Ik-hwan, said on the 22nd that it has been designated as the world's first 'SPRA Thyroid Robotic Surgery Observation and Training Center' based on da Vinci SP.
According to Ain Hospital, Intuitive Surgical, a U.S. robotic surgery device company, recently designated the hospital as an official training institution for 'SPRA (Single Port Robotic Areolar) robotic thyroidectomy' based on the da Vinci SP (Single Port) system. It also recognized Lee Jin-wook, head of the Thyroid Cancer Center, who developed the world's first SPRA procedure, as a mentor physician.
SPRA surgery is a highly advanced procedure that removes thyroid cancer through a single-port robotic system with only a minimal 2 to 3 cm incision around one areola.
The Robot Surgery Observation and Training Center is an official training program in which physicians with clinical experience and surgical results are selected as mentors under standards set by Intuitive Surgical Global Headquarters, and surgical techniques and clinical know-how are shared with medical professionals from Korea and abroad. Ain Hospital was also designated last year as the 'da Vinci Xi Hernia Robotic Surgery Observation Training Center.'
With this designation, Ain Hospital plans to provide observation and training in SPRA surgery for medical professionals from Korea and overseas.
Meanwhile, after developing the world's first SPRA thyroid surgery in December 2022, Lee has continued to give lectures and teach surgical techniques while receiving repeated invitations from medical professionals in the United States, Europe and other countries. In particular, he is recognized as a world-class authority leading the field of surgical robots in Korea and abroad, with more than 1,800 cases of da Vinci robotic surgery in his personal career.
Lee said, "SPRA thyroid robotic surgery is a minimally invasive technique that enables precise surgery while minimizing scars," adding, "This designation is an official recognition that Ain Hospital's clinical experience and training capabilities are among the best in the world."
