[Sportschosun Jang Jong-ho] A story about a man who rescued a young girl from drowning, only to be confronted by her father, has gone viral on the Chinese internet. According to Chinese media outlets including Sina.com, a man identified as A, who lives in Tianjin, was fishing by a river when he happened to spot a young girl who had fallen into the water.
He immediately jumped into the water and pulled the child out. Fortunately, the girl was unharmed. After reporting the incident to the police, A stayed by her side until her guardian arrived.
The situation later drew controversy when the girl's father arrived at the scene and reacted in an unexpected way.
He reportedly confronted A, asking why he had called the police and whether he had done so because he feared A might hold him responsible or demand compensation.
A explained that he had to call the police because no guardian was present and he needed to ensure the child's safety.
He also said that, since he could not remain at the scene indefinitely, asking the police for help was the most appropriate step.
Once the story became known, criticism of the father's behavior spread across the Chinese internet.
Netizens responded with comments such as, "Shouldn't he at least thank the person who saved his daughter's life?" "It's hard to understand how he could start by doubting the rescuer without even saying thank you," and "The rescuer's actions were completely reasonable and responsible."
Some users also pointed out that it was a matter of basic manners and consideration.
Others, however, said that because the full circumstances of the incident had not been made public, criticism should be made with caution.
