Belgian-born Julian speaks out on Japanese fans' Rising Sun Flag support: "Germany apologized, but Japan didn't, and the West should know this"

[Sportschosun Kim So-hee] Belgian-born broadcaster Julian Quintart has spoken out over the controversy surrounding Japanese supporters' use of the Rising Sun Flag.

CNN recently released a video highlighting the historical controversy surrounding the Rising Sun Flag. Julian then left a direct comment on the post and shared his views.

Julian wrote, "Japan didn't apologize as Germany did, but thanks for doing this video still, it's important that the West hear more about this...!"

His remarks drew strong attention online soon after they were made public. Julian, who has long shown a deep interest in Korean history and culture, once again raised his voice on the issue of historical awareness. The fact that a broadcaster from Belgium, rather than Korea, spoke out publicly also added to the attention.

Domestic internet users responded with comments such as, "Thank you for speaking up," "Someone who understands history properly," and "I hope more people overseas learn about this issue."

Earlier, CNN highlighted the controversy over Japanese fans' use of the Rising Sun Flag during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. CNN said, "During the World Cup, Japanese fans waved the Rising Sun Flag, drawing criticism from neighboring countries," and added, "The flag can still be easily seen at international sporting events, and debate over it continues."

It also explained that Japan argues the Rising Sun Flag is a traditional symbol that has been used for centuries, and that it was used by the Imperial Japanese military during World War II and is now also used by the JMSDF.

In contrast, South Korea and China view the Rising Sun Flag as a symbol of Japanese imperialism and aggressive war. CNN added, "In Korea and China, this flag evokes Japan's wartime atrocities," and noted that some Korean politicians have compared it to the Nazi swastika.

CNN also pointed out that "Japan has adopted a pacifist constitution and has repeatedly apologized and expressed remorse for war crimes, but it has not banned the use of the Rising Sun Flag itself." It added that "FIFA strictly restricts the use of flags carrying political messages, discriminatory expressions, or military imagery, but has not issued an official position on the Rising Sun Flag."

Meanwhile, Julian became known after appearing on JTBC's 2014 show Non-Summit. More recently, he has continued environmental protection activities as an environmental activist.
